TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Art is something I have a true passion for and is something I feel the need to do. I want to inspire students with this passion and skill set for art. I want to make a difference in art education through fostering the needs of students and their values and beliefs. I want to equip students with the ability to make informed conscious decisions through their values and beliefs. I believe in encouraging students to obtaining personal understandings in creative, supportive and engaging learning environments.
As an art educator I am constantly trying to learn and develop my processes and actions. Teaching through my own practice is invaluable in engaging students in the learning environment setting. My passion and enthusiasm for art is evident in my classroom which excites and encourages students to participate through active learning. Subject knowledge and pedagogical skills are areas I continually try to develop.
I believe building on what students already know to be a key approach to learning as this gives one a clear insight into each students background knowledge and areas of interest. My constructivist approach to teaching facilitates students to become active in constructing their own knowledge. This allows students to take ownership of their own learning. This approach to teaching and learning requires one to take the time to get to know students. I believe a constructivist approach is invaluable in facilitating a supportive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds.
My teaching philosophy is based on a student-centred approach to visual art. Discovery learning is evident in my classroom. A discovery learning approach is one that enables students to learn through doing. Facilitating this type of learning is rewarding by guiding students through a process of constructing their own knowledge.
